Who Sent the Serpent? My New Book Is Out Now

There is a story almost everyone in the Western world thinks they know, and almost no one has read slowly.

A garden. A man and a woman. A forbidden tree. A talking snake. An apple. A fall.

But there is no apple in Genesis. There is no mention of Satan. There is no word for "the Fall". The snake is never called a devil, a demon or a disguise. And the tree is not the tree of sin. It is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which is a very different and far more unsettling thing to forbid.

Today I am proud to announce that my new book, WHO SENT THE SERPENT? Genesis Never Said It Was Satan, is out now on Amazon in paperback and Kindle.

WHAT THE BOOK ASKS

The whole book is built around one question:

Who told humanity not to know, and who told humanity to open its eyes?

In Genesis, the serpent makes two predictions. The couple will not die that day, and their eyes will be opened. Both come true. The warning of death on the very day they eat does not. So what really happened in that garden? Who was telling the truth?

WHAT YOU WILL FIND INSIDE

Across 38 chapters in six parts, I take you through:

• A slow, careful reading of Genesis 2 and 3, line by line
• What the Hebrew word for the serpent, nāḥāš, actually means
• Serpents in the ancient Near East, and in Jewish and early Christian tradition
• How, and when, the serpent was turned into Satan
• Why knowledge was forbidden, and why Eve was a seeker, not just a deceived woman
• The Gnostic texts found buried at Nag Hammadi in 1945, which tell the same story the other way round
• Whether Adam and Eve were really the first humans
• Jung, consciousness, and the garden as a state of mind

This book is not a work of piety, and it is not a work of mockery. It is an honest investigation into some of the oldest and most contested pages ever written about who we are.

Did we fall, or did we wake up?
