What if the world was never meant to be perfect?

What if the world was never meant to be perfect?

In The World That Came Through a Mistake, I explore one of the most unsettling ideas preserved in ancient Gnostic thought: that the material world may not be the flawless creation of the highest divine reality.

The Apocryphon of John presents the Invisible Spirit as the ultimate, transcendent source of existence. Yet the material cosmos emerges further down the divine order, through Sophia and the appearance of the Demiurge, Yaldabaoth.

This changes the question.

Instead of asking only, “Why does a good God permit suffering?”, the Gnostic texts invite us to ask whether suffering, limitation and disorder reveal something about the very structure of the world we inhabit.

Perhaps the deepest human longing for something beyond this world is not simply dissatisfaction.

Perhaps it is remembrance.
